Tess Bailey and her crew of fellow rebels are on the run after happening upon and stealing a lab ship that are seemingly filled with mysterious serums. After fleeing from their pursuers, and landing for repairs, Tess is offered aid by Shade Ganavan, a handsome stranger, with unknown motivations, that Tess is immediately attracted to but not sure if she can trust.
As the threat to Tess and her crew is far from over, both Tess and Shade will have to grapple with the secrets they keep and figure out where they fit with a war looming on the horizon.
Fans of Amanda Bouchet’s Kingmaker Chronicles will find a lot to love about Nightchaser and the beginning of this new series. In fact, for me, some of the things that kind of grated a little in the first series was dealt with better this time around.
For example, we have a heroine with a mysterious past and some skeletons in her closet. Instead of making the secrets really obvious yet choosing to not disclose them to the readers until well after we’d all figured them out (as in her previous series), Amanda Bouchet decided to level with readers right from the start on who exactly Tess Bailey is. Even though this occurs relatively early on, I’m still not going to tell you, you must read the book! Everything else that Tess doesn’t understand about herself, or her past, is all stuff that is still unknown to the reader, so we’ll be learning it at the same time as Tess which makes for a more compelling read in my opinion.
As said above, Nightchaser also features everything that made the Kingmaker Chronicles great. The trust between Tess and her crew. This is a ragtag group of people who came together, at first, out of a need to escape and end up forming a family. I look forward to seeing how deep their devotion to one another runs seeing as there are still obstacles in the foreseeable future. Amanda Bouchet did a great job of fleshing out these secondary characters, and making me care, even though this is Tess, and to a slightly lesser extent Shade’s, story.
I loved the chemistry between Tess and Shade. It’s there from the first moment they meet and doesn’t let up for the entirety of the read. They definitely give Cat and Griffin a run for their money. I appreciated that Amanda Bouchet made the decision to give us Shade’s perspective throughout. He’s got an interesting past himself and meeting Tess puts him in a precarious situation where he has to make really think about his choices and where he wants his life to go.
As for Tess, she’s a strong heroine who is on the precipice of being a bigger figure in the rebel alliance, if she so chooses. Her past kind of keeps her wary of people, but I think it also makes her hopeful and more drawn to those she wants to trust. Hence the connection between herself and her crew, and the way she really is attracted to Shade and wants there to be something between them but tries to be open to the fact that he may not be entirely forthright with his motivations. There were a few times I was a little surprised by how much Tess is unaware of her surroundings. Definitely some instances where I thought that she should have expected certain repercussions but was blindsided by them. I guess that just goes to show that despite being on the run for several years, Tess is still somewhat new to the rebel game
I felt like the story itself starts of with a bang. I wasn’t prepared for the high intensity beginning which really pulled me into the story. I wouldn’t say the middle is slow, but it certainly lulls the reader into a sense of normalcy and routine, until we’re thrust back into conflict which will lead us nicely into the sequel. I can’t wait to see what’s next for Tess and her crew.

Nightchaser edition by Amanda Bouchet Romance eBooks Reviews

FINAL DECISION A good start to a new series. I liked that this is a sci-fi romance story. I especially liked that Tess is a very capable, strong and determined woman. Although there is a lot of setup in this book, the story was intriguing enough to keep me interested to the end.

THE STORY Captain Tess Bailey and her motley space crew are on the run for their lives. With her ship damaged and needing repairs, they land on a planet where Tess meets Shade Ganavan. Shade and Tess have an immediate attraction but he also gets on Tess's nerves. As to two spend time together, the secrets that each is keeping might get them killed.

OPINION I enjoyed this book. I haven't read a lot of sci-fi romance and this one has a Star Wars feel to it but with some dystopian Hunger Games thrown in. The reader arrives in the middle of the action and the first part of the book is exciting.

The center portion of the book is centered on the romance. Honestly, however, the characters felt younger than their ages. This book definitely had a young adult feel to it despite the ages of the characters. In fact, Tess felt too naive and innocent for her experience and that bothered me somewhat. For someone on the run who is hiding, she seems to tell a lot of people her secrets -- except, of course, Shade.

The action picks up in the last third of the book and its like all the tension and mysteries are sprung for the reader. I enjoyed this portion the best because it felt like there were payoffs.

I did enjoy the mysteries and the secrets and that kept me wondering what was happening in the book. That was the highlight of this story combined with the chemistry between Shade and Tess. They have an interesting relationship that challenge their expectations and plans.

I didn't feel that this book was a home run like the first book in the Kingmaker Chronicles series. This book felt more uneven and fans looking for sci-fi may be challenged by the entire center of the book that is about building Shade and Tess's relationship.

I'm going to admit to be wary of this series. I loved the beginning of the Kingmaker Chronicles and was really disappointed by the final book in the trilogy. So I'm going to be careful about being excited about this series until I see how it turns out. I worry that the great promises of these stories will ultimately not be as good as the expectations.

WORTH MENTIONING While this book doesn't have a cliffhanger, it is clear that there is more to the overarching storyline to be continued in future books.

CONNECTED BOOKS NIGHTCHASER is the first book in the Endeavor series.

STAR RATING I give this book 4 stars.

NOTE I received an ARC of this book via Edelweiss in order to assist in preparing this review. I was not required to write a review or to write a positive review. All opinions contained herein are my own.
I really enjoyed the Kingmaker series, excluding the ending of the 3rd book (waaaaay too rushed and didn't make a lick of sense. Almost like it was written by someone else.) I reread the teaser to this book a few times over the year because I was excited. I liked the flow of the KM, so what would she do with a space story? It's hard to find a galactic story that isn't all smutty with a stupid woman character tripping over her heart and oh my gosh, he's so taken with her because she's soooo innocent (otherwise known as dumb as shit) and smiles shyly throughout the book.
Finally, I thought, here's a story that should be different.
I was let waaaay down.
Tess is so freaking trusting all the way through, but she's been through all this trauma, so don't mess with her, except Shade. Because he's the first cute guy she's EVER seen and that makes him safe. And he's this mysterious stranger who's actually not that mysterious.
Whhhhhhhhy??? Why do authors keep doing this?? I waited in anticipation for a year. Maybe my expectations were too high. Maybe I keep expecting Sarah J Maas level writing when I shouldn't. I don't know. All I know is, I am already frustrated with this series.
