Darkness Before Dawn J A London Books

I confess, Darkness Before Dawn did not start well for me. The contrived premise of a vampire dystopia, a love triangle between a 'perfect' human body-friend and a dangerous vampire lover, and even the cover art of this book, all smelt of a calculated effort to cash in on the YA market.

Coupled with the challenge of suspending my disbelief that high-school still existed in this deadly world, and that a teenager was chosen to be an important delegate between humans and vampires (upholding the VampHu treaty, seriously couldn't London have come up with a slightly more inventive title?) for the first half of Darkness Before Dawn, I thought the novel was a goner.

But things started to change. The authors reveal a real talent for scary writing. The first appearance of 'Hoodie' was actually a little spine-tingling. The tangled contrived plots, mentioned above, that originally left me wondering what the actual story was about, started to weave together to a high-stakes (no pun intended) tension ridden storyline.

An OK love triangles are very 2000 and nothing, but effort is made to not make this a simple affair and while I wouldn't class the love story as award winning, it will at least keep the reader guessing.

A short word on prose - London doesn't like to mess around. If you're looking for drawn out emotionally charged scenes, this is not the book for you. When a character reveals an emotion in this book, they get a paragraph, or 2 tops.

In a market saturated with dark teenagers swooning over vampires with major age gaps, I'm not sure I would say Darkness Before Dawn stands out amongst the rest. However if you are looking for something new within the genre, I recommend trying this one out.

Darkness Before Dawn J A London Books Reviews

Only sunlight can save us.

We built the wall to keep them out, to keep us safe. But it also makes us prisoners, trapped in what's left of our ravaged city, fearing nightfall.

After the death of my parents, it's up to me--as the newest delegate for humanity--to bargain with our vampire overlord. I thought I was ready. I thought I knew everything there was to know about the monsters. Then again, nothing could have prepared me for Lord Valentine . . . or his son. Maybe not all vampires are killers. Maybe it's safe to let one in.

Only one thing is certain Even the wall is not enough. A war is coming and we cannot hide forever.....

MY REVIEW
Truly loved this book...I have been waiting to read another vampire novel...due to the fact that I was a little worn out..but this one was so different. A world where we know vampires exist and we not only live amongst them but we have a treaty where we work together...of course that is until someone breaks the treaty...and then the love story...or the love triangle I should say..WOW..breathtaking...this book had turns and twists that you never see coming...I loved it and cant wait to read the next one!!!Darkness Before Dawn (Darkness Before Dawn - Trilogy)
When checking out Teen paranormal/romance books I came across Darkness Before Dawn. To be very honest I am not a huge vampire fan, and I try to avoid them at all costs...But the premise of a world when Vampires and humans have in all out war and the aftermath of that war was intriguing. The author does know how to set the scene in this book. You can almost imagine yourself there beside these characters. After reading I was conflicted if I really loved it or just meh, I felt like the characters especially Dawn could have been more. I didn't feel a connection with her. I felt the book went a little to fast and when finding out major plots Dawn kind of just was like OK. This book is more than just a love triangle, its about saving humanity. It is definitely not your average vampire book. Its a lot darker and more intense. If you are looking for something different then I suggest picking this up and giving it a chance. I am going to read the second and most likely the third book to finish the series.
I realize that the current market is oversaturated with vampire fiction. Most is pretty bad but I found myself caring for "Darkness Before Dawn." Without going too much into plot details, I really enjoyed the world building, which seems to be the missing factor in many YA books. I believed in the setting J.A.London created and I could envision dystopian Denver, the Walls protecting humans from Vampires and the Victorian era obsessed Lord Valentine demanding corsets and curtsy of his guests.

After her parent's death, Valentine selects Dawn to be the delegate of human-vampire relationships. She comes across very strong, gutsy and as she put it "adventurous." But as a selected Delegate responsible for the well-being of an ENTIRE CTIY, she came across little bit immature, getting herself into situations way above her head and often making decision that important Delegates should not be making, especially when so much is riding on their back. I hoped Dawn would be more responsible and question things on every turn. She has every right to it as a Delegate and someone of GREAT importance to human survival. As the story progressed, she was becoming more and more a Damsel who wants to believe she is a kick-ass hero. I guess being constantly saved by someone (Victor, Michael, etc) will do that. The book lacked serious emotional depth. I could not find myself connecting with Dawn so none of the big revelations at the end resonated with me. Most of these big revelations I saw coming miles miles miles ahead. Some of it was wayyyy to obvious. The secondary characters did not have enough personality for me to care and the best friend/sidekick ended up being a brainless, shallow moron which seems to be a trend in YA books. Very annoying.

I really enjoyed the human/vampire politics. Valentine was interesting, The Agency intrigued me, and the anti-vampire league also brought certain level of danger to the story.
And then you have Victor. He is definitely one of those swoon worthy guys but once again, not a whole lot emotional depth there. He was little too bland for me. The romance wasn't instant, per say, but it did escalate rather quickly which bugs the living bejesus out of me. It definitely slid into Twilight territory few times which had me eye rolling. The last two lines truly shocked me to the core, but then I read first chapter of the sequel and was deeply disappointed. WHAT WAS THE POINT OF ALL THAT?

I give this book 3.5 star because I enjoyed the vampire-dystopia concept, creepy villains, and TRUE sense of danger, believable world building and overall dark tone of the book. I'm hoping the sequel improves the character because right now, I don't care if any of them lived or died.
