The Forgotten Ones is a well written story that grabs you from the first chapter. I was immediately pulled into Allison's world, and I empathized with her as she molded her life around her mother. I'm not into spoilers so all I will say is: prepare to be whisked away on an adventure into another world along with Allison. This book is like reading an outline of a really great novel. It is a very interesting story. The story seemed to crawl in the beginning without a clear purpose as to why it is being drawn out, because one does not really learn a lot about the characters in the creeping stage of the book. Later it seems as though the climax of the novel is in fast forward and all of the sudden were are the end ready for book 2. I got to the end and looked back and thought, "Oh, guess that was the climax and I didn't realize in". Problem is I really don't know enough about the characters or the imaginary world to invest time in a second book even though I know the second would be interesting were it more developed. Other areas I had trouble with I couldn't understand her antagonism toward Ethan. Needs to be better explained. Needs better description of the fae world/people. All descriptions are vague and rushed. The names were difficult. They stop the flow and pull me out of the story as I try to remember - now who is this and how is that pronounced again. Very frustrating. This novel has much potential, but a lot of detail and development need to occur to advance this story from fair to excellent.
I liked how this novel started out. Young woman with schizophrenic mom, unknown father, raised by grandparents. Mystery! Allison sounded like an interesting character with a slightly troubling past. A little cliché, though; never fit in, would rather hang out and read than be with her friends. Whatever, I can look over that.
The story was...kind of there? I found the author's writing style to be rather passive and a little blah. I didn't feel I was getting the entire picture of this world, or the characters in it. I was not gripped by this story. I actually thought the 'climax' of this novel was an event to build up to the actual climax, and then, suddenly, the book ended. I had to go back and make sure I didn't accidentally skip another hundred pages or so.
This novel was a little short for fantasy. I estimate it was around 60,000 words, when typically you'll find good fantasy up in the 100,000 range. And it showed. The world was not as rich or vivid as it should have been, which I think would have added immensely to the quality of this book.
Another little annoyance, which is more personal than anything, the names of the Danaan are spelled traditionally (and 'traditionally' means weird for the average English speaker). How the names are actually pronounced is far different than how most people would initially read them. The author provides a little pronunciation section at the front of the book to help, but it's incredibly annoying to go back and forth when you're reading from a . I would have appreciated it if the author had spelled the Danaan names so it would be easier for people who had little to no experience with Irish culture or history to pronounce them correctly.
Decent but not that good, then ruined by cliffhanger ending. Didn't feel like whole book, just about the 1st third. 2 star at the most... that is being generous, I think.
The Forgotten Ones is a NA/YA modern fantasy, which follows a young woman, Allison, who has done everything in her power to focus on caring for her mother. If not for her grandparents, she would never go out with her friends or even attend a cookout. All of this because her mother lost her mind after she was born. Beautiful and charismatic before, now she cannot even leave the house. It broke my heart, and Allison’s in the book, when her mother cannot remember her daughter and gets agitated thinking Allison is her father, whom she resembles. And then her father shows up and promises to make it right, to bring Allison’s mom back from the dark place she’s gone in her mind.
The story is well-written and short, great for those who like a quick read. I liked how it gets to the point, building the empathy for the mother and her daughter, making me hope Allison loosens up a bit and gets together with Ethan. The romance gets rather bazaar, though, particularly when the dad shows up. There’s lots of jealousy between Ethan and Allison, though I found Ethan’s to be rather amusing. I won’t go into why due to the potential for spoilers.
The fantasy focus is on Irish mythology, faeries who entrance and enslave humans. The mythology is interesting, but I found all of the names and personalities of the faeries a little hard to keep up with. They went from just a couple to half a dozen or so, rather quickly, I might add, and then migrated between being friend, foe and other. Allison also experiences a bunch of visions, but they seem to be hit or miss. Are they foreshadowing? Are they telling the future as it will be, or as it could be? Maybe some will be explained in the next couple of books, but I think some were there just to build tension whether or not they ever pan out.
Anyway, I thought this was a great book. There’s fantasy, dark mythology, and bit of romance and action in a neat YA/NA package. The book sets the stage for the next in the trilogy and isn’t meant to be a standalone.
